Dog age calculator

Compare two adult age estimates, or find a routine for your puppy’s actual weeks.

Worked example

A starting point, with room for real life.

At 6 years, medium size: estimated human years 42 by the AKC size chart; 59.7 by Wang’s epigenetic formula.

These methods compare age; they do not predict lifespan. Below one year, the result shows the puppy life stage. Giant dogs are outside this chart.

Next-step plans support puppies aged 7 to 24 weeks. Older ages use the 24-week starting point.

How does the dog age calculator work?

Enter the age you know, then choose the size your dog reached as an adult. You can switch between years and weeks. Weeks are useful when your puppy is still tiny; years are easier when you are checking an older companion. A guessed birthday remains a guess after calculation. Keep that uncertainty in mind before comparing two dogs.

For adults, two answers appear together with their method names. The size chart gives one human-age comparison. The epigenetic formula gives another. They describe different ways of comparing aging, so a difference between them is expected. Neither tells you how many birthdays your dog has left. Do not average the answers into a supposedly more accurate number.

If you came here because a young puppy seems restless, start with the schedule by age instead of treating the human-year answer as a behavior rule. A puppy does not need to act like a human child of any particular age. For a concrete early routine, the eight-week example shows where potty trips, meals and quiet time can fit. Keep the actual puppy in front of you at the center of the plan.

How old is six in dog years?

At six dog years, the chart comparison changes with adult size. The by-size table below lets you compare the same birthday across the three supported groups. These are approximate human-year comparisons, not separate birthdays and not a test of fitness. A lively dog and a slower dog can have the same chronological age.

The small category is labeled small or toy in this tool and follows the AKC chart for dogs up to 20 pounds. Medium follows its 21 to 50-pound group, and large follows its 51 to 100-pound group. Giant dogs have a different chart and are outside this version. Do not select large simply because it is the closest available button for a giant breed.

When the age falls between whole years, the calculator fills the gap between the neighboring chart rows. That interpolation is our display choice, not an extra study result. It is useful for a dog aged two and a half, but the decimal does not make the comparison precise. If size is your unanswered question, the puppy weight calculator explains its own supported range. Use the crate measurement tool for physical fit rather than choosing equipment from human years.

What changes when your puppy is under one year?

The result switches to a puppy life-stage message below one year. The calculator does not stretch the adult logarithmic equation backward to produce a misleading human-age number for a very young animal. You will see the age in weeks and a route into a suitable daily routine instead. A matching published week links directly to its own page; other weeks lead to the schedule hub.

Use those weeks to organize observation, not to set a deadline. Write down what happened before an accident, whether the last nap was interrupted, and which short practice session ended comfortably. Those notes are more useful for planning tomorrow than a large converted number. If you are comparing littermates, give each puppy room for a different day.

The twelve-week routine is one example of how to make a day readable. For the practical details behind that routine, follow the potty training guide. If a crate is part of your setup, the crate introduction guide starts with calm, voluntary steps. An age comparison cannot decide how long your puppy should stay alone. Watch comfort, arrange help when needed, and make the next repetition easier when the puppy struggles.

Common mistakes when reading dog years

The first mistake is multiplying every birthday by seven. A single multiplier hides the changing relationship between age and development. The second is treating the epigenetic answer as a personal laboratory result. This page does not collect a sample or measure your dog's DNA. It evaluates a published equation using the age you enter.

Another mistake is changing a dog's routine simply because the output looks older than expected. Think of the answer as context for a conversation, not a direction to restrict play or change meals. Your own observations and professional advice matter more than the label. If the entered age is outside the supported chart, correct it or use another source rather than forcing it into the nearest endpoint.

Keep the units consistent too. Twelve weeks and twelve years are very different inputs. Read the unit beside the field before pressing Calculate, then check that the result's life stage makes sense. You can change the input and run a fresh comparison without creating an account. Nothing you type into this calculator is uploaded or saved by the tool. If you choose to build a puppy plan afterward, the link carries only a supported puppy age and size into that separate flow.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter your measurements

Choose the labeled units and size group. Keep a note of any details you are estimating.

  2. Calculate and read the method

Read the estimate alongside its limits. The worked example stays available without JavaScript.

  3. Choose one useful next step

Follow the related guide or build a puppy routine using your selected age and size.

How this is calculated

For adults from 1 to 16 years, the AKC size chart is interpolated between whole-year rows. Small/toy uses the chart’s small category. Wang et al. (2020): human age = 16 × ln(age in years) + 31. That study used Labrador retrievers; this is a comparison, not a DNA test or lifespan forecast. One year is converted to 52 weeks for this tool. Under one year, we show a puppy life stage instead of either adult method.

Questions about Dog age calculator

How old is a 14 year old dog in dog age?

At 14 years, the chart gives 72 human years for small dogs, 78 for medium dogs and 88 for large dogs. These are comparisons, not remaining-life estimates.

How old is a 2.5 year old dog?

Between the two-year and three-year chart rows, our interpolation gives 26 human years for the supported sizes. The epigenetic method produces a separate estimate.

How do you know the exact age of a dog?

A reliable birth record gives chronological age. This calculator cannot discover a birthday or confirm an age guessed from appearance.

How old is 6 in dog years?

At six years, the chart gives 40 human years for small dogs, 42 for medium dogs and 45 for large dogs.

Is 7 years a long life for a dog?

Age alone cannot answer that for an individual dog. Breed, size and personal history matter; a converted age is not a lifespan forecast.

What are the different stages of puppy development?

A puppy is still developing, so an adult human-age comparison is not a developmental assessment. Below one year this calculator shows the puppy life stage instead of applying the adult chart. Use your puppy’s chronological age for routines and ask your vet about individual development.
